Biography of Author Presenting at Accio 2005

Petra Rehling

Having grown up in the small city of Unna in Germany, Petra Rehling became a Chinese major at Bochum University in 1989, the year of the disheartening crackdown of Chinese officials on students in Tiananmen Square. Nonetheless, under the guardianship of the late Sinology legend Professor Dr. Helmut Martin, Asia soon became the young student's passion. She spent many years of study and research in Taiwan and Hong Kong, finally publishing her Ph.D. about Hong Kong cinema in 2001 (transl. Hong Kong cinema: Traditions, a search for identity, and the 1997-syndrome). The book hit the shelf in Germany as one of the few German publications on the topic and is now going into its second edition. Petra Rehling has been dabbling in cultural and media studies ever since. Her recent desire is to launch an online journal on popular culture and set to rest her web magazine "Sinozine", which has been "gathering dust" ever since she moved to work as assistant professor in the English department of Dayeh-University in Taiwan in the year 2002.
